St. Edward School System

St. Edward has one public school, District 17, which is the only K-12 school in the immediate area. District 17 was formed in 1874 and built by volunteers in the northwest part of town. This work was done by volunteers due to the lack of money from the four taxpayers in the area. Just a few years later, a two-story building was built to replace the old school which was turned into a residential dwelling. The class of 1893 was the first to hold a simple graduation; this class consisted of only one boy and one girl. In 1895 another building was added near the school to meet the needs of an expanding population. This building was helpful but nothing grand and it was nicknamed the "chicken coop" by the students as well as the faculty. The "chicken coop" was later remodeled into a residential home.

After the two story building was converted into a barn in 1917, it was replaced by two brick structures and included a gymnasium and a stage. In 1929 an ag shop was built, and in 1935 the gym and stage were torn down and replaced. It wasn't until 1971 that the present school building was built, the old ag shop and the old gym still stand, although converted for other uses.

The present school has Kindergarten, Elementary, Junior, and Senior High School in one building. School sponsored sports include: football, basketball, volleyball, and track. The school currently has around 150 students, is classified as a D-2 school by the Nebraska School Activites Association, and competes in the Goldenrod Conference.
